The People

The people of Himachal Pradesh are descended from a number of races, sects, religions and communities, but all live in harmonious serenity. There are those of the Hindu communities including Brahmins, Kannets, Gurkhas, Rathis, Rajputs, and Kolis; and the tribal population comprised of Gaddis, Gujjars, Kinnars, Lahaulis and Pangawals.

Friendliness and hospitality is practiced everywhere and everyone is made to feel at home and part of the family in this beautiful largely untouched area where the mountains touch the skies and the earth and all that live on it are revered.

The Culture

Hindi is the official language of the state but many locals speak Pahari which has many dialects and can be traced back to the Sanskrit language, which is said to be the origin of all languages. Other languages that are spoken in various regions are Dogri, Gojri Kangri, Kinnauri, and Punjabi.

Most of the people in Himachal are Hindus although there are also quite a number of Buddhists living in Himachal, and there are many pagodas, temples and shrines in every town and village.

The people of this area depend on agriculture for livelihood although some of them raise goats, sheep and cattle. Most people live in small double storey houses with sloping slate roof.

Himachal is well known for its arts and crafts and the locals produce beautiful carpets, leather works, pashmina shawls, woodwork and paintings. The metal ware includes idols, ritualistic vessels, utensils and gold and silver jewelry and is very sought after. The Dom tribe is famous for the bamboo items it makes, such as bamboo baskets, chairs, boxes, sofas, and racks.

The Cuisine

The local Himachalis cuisine consists mainly of a lot of red meat and wheat bread with thick rich gravies and plenty of aromatic spices. Some of the local dishes that are unique to Himachal include Bhagjery, Chouck, Pateer, and chutney of Til. Roti Sabzi, flat pancake-like bread made up of wheat and vegetable curry is a favorite, as is Patande, the Indian Pancake of Himachal Pradesh.
